Seiken Budo Seminars

More and more instructors have been inquiring about Takeshin Seiken Budo. Although this personal art is difficult to describe briefly, we can make the following points about it:

  1. It is developed from the principles of traditional karate and aiki with some influence from other arts.
  2. Although it, in places, seems to overlap Hapkido, Kempo, Kali, Wing Chun, and Tai Chi, most of it is original. Where exercises or techniques were borrowed from other styles, they are so noted.
  3. It can complement most other hard or soft martial arts.
  4. It progresses about 50% faster than our traditional martial studies.
  5. It concentrates on ranges from grappling to staff with most emphasis on medium range and close range interaction.

Here are some potential topics for a Seiken Budo seminar.

Introduction to TAKESHIN SEIKEN BUDO

A survey course in the five dan levels of Seiken Budo with concentration on nidan, sandan, and yondan.

NIDAN LEVEL: from long to moderate range

This level is closest to Hapkido and Kempo and bases its format on the X-shape. Although we do not advocate the X-block used literally, this motion serves as a paradigm on which to build the reception of this level. There are many kicks and leg entangles employed as well. Exercises include reaction drills from long and moderate distances.

SANDAN LEVEL: from middle to short range

Strongly influenced by the Wu Wei kung-fu of Joseph Cowles (an early student of Bruce lee), this level teaches closing from a moderate position using traps and counters traps. To this format is added locks and throws. Exercises include close-in off-balancing and sensitivity drills.

YONDAN LEVEL: minimal motion

Learn how to draw the opponent to you and receive his strike without moving your feet. Twenty basic movements compose the fundamentals of this level which, for most people, is the most unique and fascinating of the progressive methods in the system. From a very simple framework, one progresses rapidly to intricate and subtle manipulations of uke using only minimal motion.

Integrating grappling with Aiki & Karate

For those not familiar with judo wrestling or other grappling styles, this instruction provides a much needed compliment to striking or standing locking.

Weaponry

The basics of manipulating the bo, jo, hanbo, tanjo, bokken, and/or tanto using Seiken Budo principles. Weapon vs. weapon or free hand vs. weapon defense is included as well.
