Understand your Purpose in Studying
Martial Arts
Be honest with yourself. You can achieve personal goals only if you face them head-on. Use the following guide to determine the reason(s) for your interest in martial arts. We have found that most people study martial arts for one of four reasons. Perhaps yours is among them.
- Self-defense
- Self-development (includes self-confidence, self- control, exercise, etc.)
- Sport (either form- or fighting-competition)
- To Practice as an Art Form
Perhaps you are motivated by a different reason.
- Interest in the Orient
- Interest in Mind-Body Harmony
- To Fulfill an Ideal Self-image
- To have a Fun Pastime
Or perhaps you have a combination of motivations or one we have not mentioned. If so, try to articulate it to yourself. Congratulations! Most people never stop to ask themselves what their underlying motivations are. You have.
Now ask, "What have I done to get where I want to go?" And then, "What do I plan to do in the immediate future to fulfill my goals?" BUSHIDO-KAI offers a proven method to achieving many of the goals offered above, but it cannot be all things to all people.
